Have you ever gone to the thrift store and just seen something TOTALLY ugly that you can’t imagine anyone buying? Well, while this giraffe candle holder isn’t that bad, I thought it was pretty bad when I saw it.
I recently discovered that I’ve become somewhat of a regular at my local Salvation Army. We’re not on a first name basis or anything, but me and the employees are definitely familiar with each other. I can’t help it though, they offer such good prices and I always find such interesting stuff to makeover. I just can’t quit you, Salvation Army! That brings me to this week’s Transformation Tuesday craft. I found this giraffe candle holder for about $1 and I automatically knew I had to do something with it.
I’m sure it would look good in some homes as-is, but I’m just not a traditional home decor kind of girl. I really didn’t see it going anywhere in our apartment OR in our new house. So I got out my trusty spray paint and got to work! First I spray painted it a tealish-blue sort of color, I believe the exact name of the paint is “Lagoon.” I always use Rustoleum spray paint because you can pretty much paint anything with it, including metal, wood, and my favorite, plastic.
It was definitely already improved with the re-paint. But then I wanted the giraffes’ spots to stand out. So I got out a variety of colorful acrylic paints and painted over the spray paint.
I love it! It’s so bright and colorful and fun. Not at all stodgy like the original candle holder. This giraffe craft project was definitely one of my most fun DIY projects to date. I had so much fun just sitting and painting all the spots. I think I will put it in my new craft room once we move.
