DIY Hippo Herb Planter

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Miracle-Gro for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I love fresh basil. I love putting it in anything I’m cooking, sandwiches, heck, I think I’d even eat it plain for a snack. But I’m terrible at keeping it alive. I don’t know how many herb plants I’ve accidentally killed. But now with  The Gro Project from Miracle-Gro, I’m hoping my basil will thrive – and it looks super cute in my new DIY herb planter!

The Gro Project is helping newbie gardeners go from “green” to “green thumb,” by showing those of us who may have *ahem* “let a few plants go” see that garden projects are FUN and they don’t have to be complicated. In fact, I made my own herb planter in just 15 minutes!

I started with this hippo watering can I got from theTarget one spot last year, plus Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and some plantable basil from the grocery store.

I cut the opening in the hippo watering can a bit bigger and drilled some holes in the bottom for drainage.

Next, I filled the hippo (isn’t he cute? I named him Henry!) 1/3 of the way home with the potting mix. I spread the roots of the basil and put them inside of Henry Hippo. This is more of an outdoor activity, but if you’re doing it in the house like I was, I suggest you do it in the sink (or a bathtub maybe).

I filled the planter the rest of the way with the potting mix, I watered my basil, and I let it drain. It was so fast and easy to make my basil planter. And with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix, I don’t have to worry about over-watering or under-watering my basil. The exclusive Aquacoir formula in the potting mix absorbs 33% more water to protect against watering mishaps, and the enriched MicroMax nutrients will help to keep my delicious basil super hearty and vigorous.

Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix works for all kinds of containers or potted plants, and they have tons of fun garden projects and ideas that you can try out – you can even put a plant inside a ukulele (I really want to try that project, but I don’t have a ukulele! Anyone know where to find a cheap ukulele?). You can follow Miracle-Gro on Pinterest too, and get continuous updates on fun new projects and gardening tips.

Thanks for checking out my gardening project. I can’t believe how fast and easy it was to do. I still have some potting mix leftover so I’m definitely going to be making some more cute planters in the future (and I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for a ukulele).

What unconventional item would you use for a planter?

Hahaha…I love the hippo! And I love growing my own herbs. My fave way to use the basil is on a grilled provolone and tomato sandwich. Mmmm!

This planter is adorable! I love Miracle-Gro. I’ve had great luck with it! I also like the irony of using a moisture grow product for a plant that you have planted in a watering can, very cute! 🙂
