DIY Pug Painting: Take Two

As promised, I went back to the BYOB painting class, and I painted my other pug dog Roscoe.I got to the class fairly early, so I had a good chance to get set up prior to the class starting. Imagine my surprise when a complete stranger walked in and said, “Hey, it’s you!” Apparently the owner of the BYOB painting class had put my picture up on their website with my last pug painting. And now I am famous in the pooch painting art world (at least in San Diego anyway, haha).

Here is the original picture I submitted of Roscoe:

You can see my husband in the background. This is probably the only time he will ever appear on this website as he is extremely camera shy. Roscoe on the other hand is quite photogenic, I must say.

The owner of the BYOB painting class (Jeff) sketched out Roscoe for me with a special request. You can kind of see in the above picture that Roscoe has a white patch on his chest, but in other pictures you can tell more clearly that it looks like a heart. So I actually submitted another picture where is face isn’t as expressive, but you can see the “heartness” of the patch, and Jeff was kind enough to merge the two photos into one sketch.

I started by outlining the sketch in black and then painting in the background. My husband is a huge Packers fan, and we have a running joke that Roscoe really likes watching the Packers games too (really I think he just likes sitting on the couch with my husband). So as an homage to the Packers I painted the background yellow and green.

I then filled in the body. It was definitely a challenge because Roscoe is a black pug, but I had used black paint for all the detailing. I ended up using a very, very dark brown for his body and then mixing some blue with the black for the detailing. Jeff was a little kind with Roscoe’s weight in the sketch, so I did fill him out a little…made him a little more Botticelli-esque. My husband thinks Roscoe still looks a lot slimmer than he actually is, so we decided it would be “thinspiration” for Roscoe.

    I love this painting! I’ve recently started painting my dogs at the local Painting Studio. 🙂 Love it! I’m addicted. But back to Roscoe. How cool that he has that heart patch!

    Amazing! I love your painting and your black pug is adorable!! I adore pugs, I have this race in my heart for ever, as we lost our dear black and white, 13 yr. old pug Ben two years ago and I still miss him so much! I have a painting too, but by an artist, not by me. Gorgeous!
